Dr. Daniel Pierce is an eccentric professor of neuroscience struggling with schizophrenia, who is recruited by the FBI to help solve complex cases. His intimate knowledge of human behavior and masterful understanding of the mind give him an extraordinary ability to read people. He has an uncanny gift that makes him able to see patterns and look past people’s conscious emotions to see what lies beneath. However, Pierce is often cursed with schizophrenic hallucinations and less-than-stellar social skills that can often complicate his work. Pierce’s hallucinations reveal things from his subconscious mind that his conscious mind hasn’t been able to process. His offbeat manner also makes it difficult for him to achieve the close friendships and intimate relationships he craves.
FBI Agent Kate Moretti is Dr. Pierce’s former student and the person responsible for recruiting him to help the FBI. Her sharp mind and intuition made her one of Pierce’s star pupils, however, her impulses and sometimes unorthodox methods recently got her demoted. Trying to rise to the top of the FBI hierarchy, Moretti looks to Pierce for collaboration on solving difficult cases involving psychiatric or neurological components. Daniel and Kate share a mutual attraction, but whether these two offbeat mavericks ever acknowledge their feelings remains to be seen.
Max Lewicki is Dr. Pierce’s teaching assistant whose primary job is to keep Pierce in line and on task. Living with Pierce, Lewicki handles his demanding schedule and takes care of his domestic demands. More importantly, he keeps Pierce centered and stable, alerting him when his intuitions are off-base or when he seems to have trouble distinguishing reality from hallucination.
Natalie Vincent is Dr. Pierce’s best friend and every bit his intellectual equal. According to Pierce's recollection, they met in grad school and although they dated briefly they have remained close platonic friends ever since. However, Pierce wouldn’t mind if they renewed their romance. Their friendship is the closest thing he has ever had to a normal relationship, but as with so many things in Daniel's life, things aren't always what they seem.
