1/11/2006
TORONTO (CP) -- Bernie Finkelstein, who started out as a band manager for 1960s act the Paupers and went on to found the country's oldest indie label, will be honoured during this year's Juno festivities. Finkelstein will receive the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award. "Throughout his career, Bernie has continually been pivotal in bringing Canadian music and artists to Canada and the world," Melanie Berry, president of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, said in a statement. Past winners include children's entertainer Raffi and concert promoter Michael Cohl. Prior to founding True North Records in 1969, Finkelstein was a band manager for the Paupers and Kensington Market. True North Records has put out over 400 releases including records by 54-40, Bruce Cockburn and Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. Finkelstein will be feted during an industry-only gala on April 1 in Halifax, and again during the Juno Awards on April 2.
