Chinese terracotta warriors coming to Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2011
11/20/2009
MONTREAL -- Ancient terracotta warriors from China are coming to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for an exhibition planned in 2011, the museum says. The show will include 14 terracotta soldiers, as well as life-size horses and numerous burial figurines from the imperial tombs of the Han emperors Gaozu and Jingdi. Nathalie Bondil, the museum's director and chief curator, says the exhibition will include artifacts that have only recently been excavated and have not appeared elsewhere on an international tour. "This exhibition will be very large in terms of the range of objects," she said Friday, adding that the newly uncovered items include bronze birds and lacquered ceramic vessels. "We are very lucky because we will have a good number of A-list objects, including 14 beautiful soldiers," Bondil said. The artifacts offer a glimpse of the Chou dynasty (1045-221 BC), the first Chin empire (221 BC to 206 BC) and the Western Han dynasty (206 BC to AD 23). The terracotta warriors have been acclaimed in other cities, including London where they appeared at the British Museum in 2008. "China: The First Emperors" is scheduled to open a 3 1/2-month run in Montreal on Feb. 11, 2011.
