Musicians, Actors, Perform on Floating Stage on Winnipeg's Assiniboine River
7/23/2010
WINNIPEG -- The Assiniboine River will be alive with the sounds of music this summer. The Forks plans to build a barge to host more than 30 musical acts and other performers for the River Barge Festival. The five-day festival starts Aug. 25 and is part of Winnipeg's designation as the 2010 Cultural Capital of Canada, an honour that comes with $2 million in federal funding. Performers at the free festival will take turns on the floating stage, which will spend its time either docked at The Forks for harbourfront shows, or pulled along the Assiniboine, serenading riverside strollers. The festival lineup includes singer-songwriters Christine Fellows, Romi Mayes, Luke Doucet and Greg MacPherson, with a special gala performance featuring the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and local star Sierra Noble. The Manitoba Theatre Centre will take to the stage for a showing of The History of Manitoba from the Beginning of Time to the Present in 45 Minutes, as will kid-friendly performers Al Simmons, Fred Penner and Rocki Rolletti. A list of performers is online at www.artsforall.ca
