GENIUS WITHIN:
THE INNER LIFE OF GLENN GOULD

As an enigmatic musical poet, world-renowned pianist Glenn Gould continues to captivate 27 years after his untimely death. Intimately revealing the man behind the myth, GENIUS WITHIN: THE INNER LIFE OF GLENN GOULD casts a fresh light on the mysterious pianist whose ideas were as controversial, and his private life as passionate, as his music. The film features never-before seen footage of Gould, photographs, and excerpts from his private home recordings and diaries. The biography also reveals personal memories from Gould's most intimate friends and lovers, some who have never spoken about him publicly before. GENIUS WITHIN is produced by White Pine Pictures Inc. in association with Bravo! and directed by Peter Raymont and Michele Hozer.

ABOUT GLENN GOULD

Glenn Gould is one of the most famous musicians worldwide because of his recorded musical works. Born in Toronto in 1932, his musical genius manifested itself at a very young age. His musical proclivity, piano style and independent mind, marked him as a maverick. Gould lived a quiet, solitary life and only left Toronto when work demanded it or for an occasional rural holiday. He recorded in New York until 1970, when he began to record primarily at Eaton Auditorium in Toronto. In the summer of 1982, he made his first recording as a conductor and he had plans for several years' worth of conducting projects. He planned to give up performing in order to retire to the countryside and devote himself to writing and composing. Shortly after his fiftieth birthday, Gould died suddenly of a stroke.

Gould's postmodernist advocacy of open borders between the roles of composer, performer and listener anticipated digital technologies that democratize and decentralize the institutions of culture. There is no question that Gould, more than any other classical musician, would have understood and admired the new digital universe. He would have had a great time being part of the digital playground.
