Sara Stanley
 A young girl from a wealthy family, Sara is sent to live with relatives in Avonlea when her own family falls apart. Upon her arrival to Avonlea she is scorned by her cousins who make it quite clear that she is an unwelcome guest as far as they are concerned. With a little time and patience Sara is able to win over the hearts of her cousins, Felicity and Felix, as she tries to find a place for herself in Avonlea.
Hetty King
 At the heart of Avonlea you will find Hetty King. She is the eldest of the King family, a designation she does not take lightly. As such, Hetty believes that her opinions and ideas are of the utmost importance, often demanding the respect of others. Hetty was educated to teach the young people of Avonlea, but her true talent lays in her ability to write fantastic prose. Hetty's mother died while Hetty was quite young, and as such, Hetty was forced to grow up very quickly and assume the responsibilities of being the oldest woman of the household. This experience has immensely defined who Hetty is today. While Hetty prides herself on being practical, she has a romantic side that exerts itself from time to time, often in the strangest of ways.
Felicity King
 Felicity is the eldest daughter of Alec and Janet King. Raised in a small, close-knit community, Felicity is confident in the knowledge that she has both her family and her community to support and admire her combination of beauty and brains. Often considered to be a tad snooty, Felicity is bursting with self-confidence and optimism for the future. Felicity will meet the love of her life, Gus, when she is 13 and 3/4 years old, and after a long and turbulent courtship, will agree to become his wife many years later.
Gus Pike
 Gus Pike was raised in an orphanage. Abandoned by his father at an early age, Gus grew up the hard way.
Gus came to Avonlea looking for a means to support himself and was offered a chance at an education by Hetty King. Gus persevered in an attempt to make a better life for himself. Gus met Felicity King while she was only 13 years old. The two became fast friends and will share a unique friendship. As the years go on, Gus will grow to be the love of Felicity's life, and, although they are very different, they eventually learn that they are very compatible.
Alec King
 Alec is the father of four; Felicity, Felix, Cecily and Daniel. He is also the brother of Avonlea's most vocal resident, Hetty King. He runs the King Farm, and prides himself on his ability to juggle farm and home life exceptionally well. Alec is a strong, compassionate father and husband who derives his greatest joy from his family.
Felix King
 Felix King is the second child of Janet and Alec, and has an older sister, Felicity, whom he loves to torment. Felix has been raised to inherit the King family farm, but often dreams of seeing the world and discovering more than what lay just outside his window.
Cecily King
 Cecily is the youngest daughter of the King clan. She is quiet and is probably the least outspoken of the whole family, Cecily's role seems to be that of a peacemaker between her older siblings. Cecily has her eye on the future, and will undergo some drastic changes to accomplish all that she finds important in life.
